Tour de Soweto

The afternoon thunderstorms threaten, the temperature is perfect and many Jo’burgers emerge from their winter hibernation and begin exercising to get their bodies in shape for the annual pilgrimage to the coast in December.

If you are looking for a health activity I suggest hopping on a bicycle and exploring Soweto.

You don’t need to be a foreigner or even fit to sign up for this fascinating tour organised by Soweto Backpackers.

I have visited Soweto many times for work and play, but a guided bicycle tour is by far the best way to see the township and learn about its fascinating history. You will meet real people and get a taste of the local chow.  The tour is great throughout the year. I have experienced it in both March and September.

Click here for the various options. I recommend the four-hour tour with lunch included in the price, although the polony burger is definitely not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.

After the bicycle tour,  set aside additional time to visit Mandela House, Hector Pieterson Museum and end the day with a bungee jump off Orlando Towers.

Let me know how you go!
